There is a tremendous volunteer spirit here at Original Kids Theatre! You see the fruit of their labour everywhere: On Stage in costumes and props; Front of House handling House Management, Box Office/ Concession and Ushering; Backstage in Stage Management, Lighting and Sound; Set Building/Painting and in Fundraising.
They are our parents. They are our older Original Kids. They are members of the community. – All incredibly generous people and if we did not have their support and dedication - Original Kids as we know it today would not exist.
Why do our volunteers do it? Well of course they are very giving people but volunteering in theatre is exciting too and we all learn so much by taking part. Also, lots of our volunteers are OKTC parents and for them it’s very different from many other volunteer positions. Our parents are working closely with their children’s shows, so in a way it’s like the energy invested is going directly back into their own families. And of course when many people pull together to work towards a common goal, we witness another benefit that comes out of the experience – the friendships that grow among our volunteers!
Volunteers are so much a part of Original Kids Theatre and a part of our history . . . . .. It was 1996 and Ann Feldman had volunteered to be the Costume Mistress of Annie Warbucks - a mammoth production that we were doing at the Talbot Theatre. Ann was interviewed backstage by a reporter from the London Free Press and as the interview was ending he asked her if one of the Kids in the cast was hers. Her answer? “You bet! Every one of them!”
Isn’t that neat? And I know that many of our Volunteers know just how she felt.
Ann became a very dear friend.. That is another benefit – the friendships that grow when people pull together for the good of a show. It isn’t only the Original Kids who come and make new and wonderful friends.
So I invite you all. Get involved! There’s so much to do and working to make theatre happen is a fun and fulfilling experience.
If you have some time to spare, please consider this your invitation to jump in and join in the work and the excitement! If you would like to know more about Volunteer Opportunities* that exist at OKTC please contact me, Kerry Hishon, Coordinator of Volunteers at 519 679-0598
