A FOND LOOK BACK The Christmas Junior Triple Bill (JOY!, Rock and Roll Santa and Yes, Virginia ) fought dire snowstorms, the flu and colds, technical glitches and accidents to bring the spirit of the season alive on the Spriet stage. We had the excitement of witnessing actors taking over roles at the last minute to fill in for ailing, stranded or injured company members; we were thrilled to fight the storm and be part of sell-out houses when much of the city had closed down. We’re proud to say that the stage lights stayed ON at OKTC!
It was my pleasure and duty to assist all Junior shows this season. As well, I was challenged to take over direction of one of them, JOY!, at the mid point of rehearsals. I got to know so many fine young company members who give their all to their work at OK and their company. They are the future of OK, and a hopeful future they definitely are!
I also got to work closely with many of our vital volunteers, and I can say without exaggeration, that you are all treasures beyond value! I also got to be a part of the fun and camaraderie that you create as you form our support teams. We all had a lot of fun and fulfillment.
I spent one performance of Yes, Virginia just sitting quietly backstage to observe the working of the show. I watched the young actors go through the intricate steps of their backstage ballet, picking up and returning props, making their many rapid and demanding costume changes, and keeping tuned into the progress and the emotion of the play out on the stage. I also watched the actions and faces of the adult backstage costumes and props team, as they smiled with pride at the professional behaviour of the 23 young actors, doing their work so maturely. When our young actors are operating at their highest level of trust, co-operation and commitment, the JOY of working with them is self-evident.
And so, my wishes for the new season are:
~That every cast and crew work together with the respect and teamwork that I observed on that one night at Yes, Virginia ,
~And that all of our staff feels the thrill that I felt as my cast of JOY! grabbed hold of the show and made it totally their own!
